New York Times: EVOLUTION IN EUROPE; Romania Frees Student Held in 53-Day Protest
AP, August 4, 1990
BUCHAREST, Romania, Aug. 3— A student who led a 53-day anti-Government rally has been freed after six weeks’ detention, and he denied charges today that he incited protesters to violence.
The student, Marian Munteanu, whose beating and detention drew domestic and international protest, was released on Thursday night. In an interview in his apartment today, he called his time in jail ”a nightmare” and pledged to continue working with the student movement.
”These six weeks of detention have aged me many years,” he said.
Mr. Munteanu, the 28-year-old president of the Bucharest student union, was a leader of an anti-Government rally that the police violently dispersed on June 13 after 53 days.
The authorities’ decision to use force against the peaceful protesters led to riots. More violence broke out when miners loyal to President Ion Iliescu came to the capital to help quell the demonstrations. Six people were killed and scores injured in three days of unrest in the capital.
Mr. Munteanu was hospitalized after being badly beaten by miners and then arrested days later. His release came shortly after the prosecutor general issued a statement saying the circumstances that led to Mr. Munteanu’s ”preventive detention” had changed and his release would no longer represent a threat to public order.
